ADEME National campaign to identify household waste
Customer name : ADEMESector : Services to local authorities
Date of realization : 2007
Project description
In its national plan on the prevention of waste production, the French Ministry for Ecology and Sustainable Development (MEDD) commissioned ADEME to run a national campaign to identify household waste as a follow up to the one run by ADEME in 1993.
A method of identifying household waste (MODECOM) was put in place with different partners in view of running a national campaign based on identifying dry waste.
In this context, in order to limit both waste transfer times and the time it took to run the campaign, France was divided up into 5 operational regions, each having a sorting plant.
The Assistant to Contracting Authority (AMO) mission undertaken by ANTEA covers, in addition to direct assistance to ADEME over a period of 12 months (from July 2007), three main areas of intervention:
- Campaign, organization, method and quality assurance (particularly the drafting of protocols and results sheets)
- Planning and operational follow-up of campaign
- Steering the campaign
Sampling was carried out on usual sites of collected waste, after truck was emptied. The samples were then transported towards a regional centre where residual household waste and bio waste went through the drying and sorting phases. Sorting was done in parallel on each operational area while ensuring the consistency of methodologies used in the different zones.
The field identification operations covered a period of 6 to 7 months.
